Simplifying Things in 2015

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I certainly did. I always love Christmas, and find it a great opportunity to catch up with family and friends.

Alas, in between Boxing Day football and New Year parties, it’s also that time of year where writers like me have to start thinking about the next twelve months, as well as looking back at the previous twelve to see what we did and how we can improve on it.

Firstly, I’m very happy with my personal output in 2014. I managed to expand the Dead Days and McDone series, as well as starting a few new series.

That said, the flipside of that coin is that I would like to simplify things in 2015. Currently, I have the Dead Days series, McDone, Blake Dent, Sinkers and The Hunger all crying out for sequels. But I think it is only fair if I focus on a couple of those series going into the new year. Fair on the readers, so I can put out the best quality books, and fair on myself so I don’t have a million plot strands tangling in my mind.

So in 2015, things are going to get simplified.

I will be publishing books in the Dead Days and Brian McDone series next year.

The other series will be on the back burner for the time being.

Why? Well, firstly because of the reasons stated above. It gives me more chance to focus and flex my creative muscles in these two very different (post-apocalyptic horror and crime mystery) series.

Also, my readers seem to enjoy these series more than any other, so if I can give readers more of what they want, that’s great.

Like I say, I’m really happy with my output in 2014. But I definitely need to simplify that output in 2015. So narrowing it down to my post-apocalyptic Dead Days adventures and my twisting, turning McDone mysteries sounds like an ideal way of doing so.

Specifically, I’ll be releasing three seasons of Dead Days (Seasons Four, Five and Six), and two McDone books (Books four and five). I also have another standalone book called I Saw You scheduled for a March launch. So there’s plenty to sink your teeth into.

If you want to see my full schedule for 2015, head over here:

Anyway, thanks very much for all your support. I hope you had a fantastic Christmas (if you celebrate it), and have a very relaxed Boxing Day.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

It’s December 24th, so I figured I’d better write a little note to say thank you for all the support in 2014.

I’m sitting at my writing computer with the notes from my current work in progress beside me. I’ll speak a little more about this WIP in the new year, but the ideas are in full flow and I can’t wait to continue exploring this fascinating new world I’ve created.

I have cover proofs for the new season of Dead Days open in a new window, which will be revealed at the start of January. In another tab, I have my promotions document for 2015 all in front of me and mapped out, so I can see all the exciting events that will be taking place in the next twelve months at a glance.

Oh. And did I mention it’s my birthday?

Happy Christmas, guys. And thanks so much for all your support, whether it be buying one of my books, reading everything I publish, commenting on these blogs–whatever. Your support is greatly appreciated.

I get to have fun with my day job on my birthday. That’s not a boast, but how many people can say that?

And it’s all thanks to you, my readers.

Thank you.

Have a very Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, a very happy holidays if not, and a fantastic new year of joy and success.

Enjoy yourselves.

Another Year

Hi everyone,

So, it’s not quite 2015 yet, but I figure we’re close enough to the end of the year to talk about the next stage of my career, and what to expect in terms of new releases in the next twelve months.

First, a bit of reflection. In November, I published the fourth book in the Brian McDone mystery series. It’s called Eye Snatcher, and I happen to think it’s the best book I’ve done. Great fun to write, and readers seem to be enjoying it too, as dark as it is.

Anyway, the launch of Eye Snatcher marked the last of my 2014 releases and my tenth book of the year (yeah, I totally had to go back to Amazon to check that). That’s quite some going, I realise. Granted, half of those books I already had written and backed up, but it’s still impressive, right?

And the truth is, I’ve thrown everything at my writing this year. I’ve done everything I can to make myself successful in the career I love. I write full time, work at it eight hours a day–sometimes way more than that. Writing is what I love, so I spend a hell of a lot of time doing it. If I had a “real job”, I’d be forced to spend time doing that. So why would I spend less time doing something I love? Go figure.

I say I pushed myself to the limit in 2014, but that’s not true, actually. Not true at all. Ten novels published in a year is an incredible feat, I know. But I’ve taken extended breaks. Like I say, most of the books I launched in 2014 were already books I’d had written and backed up for ages, and ideas I’d had planned out from 2013 and much, much further back (Sunlight has been mapped out since I was eighteen and I wrote The Hunger a long while back… wow).

So in 2015, I’m going to set myself a new challenge.

I’ve spent the last few weeks since finalising the fourth McDone book putting together a load of ideas, a load of plans, for 2015 and beyond. Literally — I’ve been locked away in my room for loads of time just thinking up new story ideas, planning out new books way into the future, revisiting manuscripts I’ve written in the past and seeing how I can improve them. Creative downtime, I call it. Something I do at least once a year. I’d recommend it.

But now I’ve finished. I’m out of the writing dungeon. The chains are off. And the ideas are flowing.

In 2015, I’m going to publish the following books.

Dead Days: Season Four, Five and Six, McDone 5 & 6, Blake Dent 3 & 4, a psychological mystery called I Saw You, and a brand new ten part monthly apocalyptic serial…. as well as another brand new trilogy.

I’m not even going to count how many books that is. I’ll let you do the maths.

Granted, several of those books are already written and are ready to release, I’m just waiting for the right time. Some of them are well developed and have been brewing in the pipeline for a long time, just waiting to release. But a few of them are just ideas and books I’ve yet to write.

But I’ll get there.

That’s my goal.

That’s pushing myself to the limit.

I’ll slow down the publishing schedule in 2016. It’s inevitable — my backlog of books and ideas will be well and truly depleted. Maybe just write one season of Dead Days and a few other things here and there.

But in 2015? No way.

2015 is my year.

Hope you’ll join me for the craziness.

Book description:

In the Brightest of Light, Darkness Resides.

Jack Simm is a man with no responsibilities. He has a cushy job, drinks a lot, and hasn’t seen his two children in several years. To Jack, a life of freedom is perfect.

But when an unexplained and devastating event turns the majority of the population into genocidal maniacs, Jack is forced to protect his two estranged children and escort them to a rumoured safe haven at the other side of the country.

Reunited with his children, Jack must finally step up to the responsibilities of being a father while adapting to a painfully horrifying dystopian world of violence and bloodshed.

Sunlight is a gripping post apocalyptic suspense thriller from the author of the bestselling Dead Days series about the lengths a parent would go to protect their children. Both thrilling and subtle, horrifying and heartwarming, Sunlight is a riveting journey through a dark and dangerous world quite like no other.

I hope you enjoy reading Sunlight. Fans of Dead Days, as well as my other suspense works, will be particularly happy with this one. I for one had an absolute blast writing it. In some ways, it’s one of the most epic books I’ve done in terms of scale, but at the same time it’s completely intimate with the core relationship at the centre.

Of course, there’s plenty of twists, turns and scares along the way too. Wouldn’t be a Ryan Casey book without them!

Happy reading!

PS: Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered this book. You did a great job of making my first pre-order experiment a very big success. I’ll be back in a short while with news on the next Brian McDone book, which will also be available to pre-order…
